What a year it has been for Daniel Augustin.   He is returning to his role as Maurice in season two of Rap Sh!t, which recently premiered November 9, 2023. Daniel has been promoted to a series regular on the show.   In addition, he has rekindled his passion for music with the recent launch of his new single and music video “Movie”.   He recently released Kinfolk: The Series, a six-episode project that he produced, directed, and cinematographed.  

I was intrigued by the multitude of experiences he had encountered, prompting me to delve further into his projects, his artistry, and his overall journey.  

“Returning to reprise the role, and in a series regular capacity, was an added bonus,” responded Augustin. He was deeply appreciative of this, understanding that no role is ever certain in the entertainment industry.   

When questioned about what to anticipate for the second season of the show, Daniel responded with a description that promises a captivating journey filled with intricate characters and profound emotions.   Prepare for a sense of intrigue.   Embrace the unpredictable.   I found myself pleasantly surprised each time I attended another table read.   Our writers have been doing an amazing job with these characters.  

He openly expressed his admiration for the show and his character due to the representation of Haitian culture. He is highly committed to improving Haitian representation in entertainment, as it is currently lacking. Alongside others who share his passion, he is making significant progress in raising awareness and ensuring proper inclusion.   It’s the aspect I enjoy the most about being on this show.   I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with Max, Issa, Syreeta, and all the individuals who are part of this project.   Augustin expressed his deep appreciation for working on a show about HIP-HOP. He mentioned that his real-life experience with the role has brought a unique sense of gratitude that he has never felt on any other show before.  

Speaking of representation, he shared with me the profound impact that shows like Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Jamie Foxx Show had on him.   Augustin expressed a sense of personal connection when observing them.   Due to the significant influence, it had on him, he is dedicated to ensuring that other individuals, particularly Haitian Americans, have equal opportunities as they grow up.   He aims to create an authentic connection by sharing stories that truly reflect their identity and origins.  

During our conversation about music and his interests, he mentioned that he had pursued both acting and music at the same time, but eventually focused more on acting.  “I was in a group called Mav-Seven when I was ten,” Daniel added.   He described the organic separation that occurred between him and his group members as they matured.  

Daniel mentioned that he has previously put out music.   However, this time it’s unique as it represents a “rebrand” for him.   He has become more focused and precise in his musical pursuits.   He has a strong desire to create a musical experience that takes the listener on a captivating journey, rather than simply releasing individual songs or an EP. ” I’m very excited. It has been some time since I last released any music. So, I’m feeling a bit nervous,” Daniel added.  

He portrayed the music video as an exhilarating love story.   The way his life unfolds is like a beautiful symphony, filled with opportunities and a perfect balance of adventure and comfort.   This beautifully crafted piece demonstrates the universal longing for a captivating melody that gracefully intertwines themes of redemption and desire.  

And at this stage of his career, it’s crucial for him to ensure that everything he does is in sync.   During our discussion, he shared insights into his experience in the entertainment industry, describing it as “magical and spiritual.”   Daniel further stated, “Everyone’s process is different, even with the abundance of books available to learn about this industry.”  

Augustin emphasized the importance of truly grasping and honing one’s skills in this industry.   He acquired this knowledge early on in his career while working as a PA for a small independent company that specialized in producing commercials.   Throughout that phase of his life, he gained a deeper understanding of the art of cinematography compared to his previous experience as an actor.   He was extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn from Laszlo Rain.   The pay may have been minimal, but the abundance of knowledge and experience he gained made the long days and nights worthwhile.  

“When I returned to the set, I had a number of questions in mind. I’m curious about the process behind capturing this shot and the reasoning behind the choice of lighting,” Augustin expressed.   He discovered the key to success in life: the combination of learning and action is essential for achieving anything you desire.  

As we approached the conclusion of our conversation, Daniel openly discussed his involvement in therapy and his commitment to daily journaling.   “Therapy, journaling, and vulnerable conversations are important,” Daniel emphasized.   He credits these factors as the motivation behind his deliberate pursuit of opportunities.   He was given a remarkable opportunity, but he chose not to accept it.   Despite its attractiveness, he understood that it wasn’t the right moment for him to seize the opportunity.   “If I agree to this, it sets off a chain reaction,” Daniel added.  

Amidst a year filled with numerous accomplishments, Daniel’s top priority is maintaining a strong sense of spiritual, mental, and emotional balance.   He concluded the conversation by expressing “I feel like this is going to be the real work I need. We all need to get to this place where we are able to go out into the world and do well for ourselves and our families.”
