Led by the dynamic duo Jean and Marcus Baylor, The Baylor Project showcases a captivating fusion of musical styles drawn from their rich and varied backgrounds. Coming from New Jersey and St. Louis, Jean and Marcus find their inspiration in their upbringing in church choirs, gospel music, and the cultural influences of their surroundings. Their musical journey exemplifies the ability to blend various genres and personal experiences, resulting in heartfelt and genuine music that connects with listeners from diverse backgrounds.

Jean said, “We sang primarily hymns and then a few other things that formulated the foundation for my love of music.”

The church choir nurtured Jean’s passion for music, exposing her to the beauty of hymns and the joy of choral singing. However, Marcus grew up in a Pentecostal apostolic church, where he honed his drumming skills from a young age.

“My mom and dad founded our home church. My dad was the pastor. I had a brother that played the organ, and my other brothers and sisters sang in the choir,” Marcus shared. 

The Baylor Project’s music effortlessly blends elements of jazz, R&B, gospel, and hip-hop, creating a captivating and unique sound that pushes the boundaries of contemporary music. Deep longing to convey their personal truth and genuine self-expression through their art fuels their creative process, unaffected by industry norms or passing fads. The albums “The Evening” and “Generations” showcase a captivating range of sounds, demonstrating the artists’ unwavering dedication to authenticity.

When asked about the motivation behind forming The Baylor Project, Marcus expressed a desire to rekindle their creativity. They both emerged from their respective groups, which had achieved considerable success. This time, their goal was to create something that would push the boundaries of their musical expression and allow them to explore their creative freedom to the fullest.

“The Evening : Live At APPARATUS” and “Generations” highlight the impressive musical talents of The Baylor Project, showcasing their range and versatility. Marcus expressed a strong emotional response when discussing the creation of “Generations.” He openly expressed that this album was a result of the pandemic, and the creative process that brought it to life through remote collaboration was truly remarkable and unlike anything he had experienced before.

Marcus described “The Evening” as completely unplanned. They recorded the album live during their performance for the New York-based company Apparatus. The company was highly impressed with The Baylor Project and went to great lengths to create a dedicated venue for a night of enchanting music.

Each track, from the mellow melodies of “Tell Me a Story” and “Here to Stay” to the groovy rhythms of “Striving” and “Walk on By,” showcases the duo’s creative growth and tells its own captivating tale. The albums pay homage to the rich heritage of Black music and culture, celebrating the trailblazing artists who have both honored tradition and pushed artistic boundaries.
