A Summer Spectacle: Jesus Christ Superstar Ignites the Hollywood Bowl August 1–3
Get ready, Los Angeles. One of the most daring and anticipated events of the summer is taking center stage at the iconic Hollywood Bowl this August 1–3, 2025. In a limited three-night engagement, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presents a bold, electrifying concert staging of Jesus Christ Superstar—Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s legendary rock opera that continues to resonate with audiences more than five decades after its debut.
This all-star revival reclaims the searing rock energy and raw emotional depth of the original 1971 production, set under the stars with full orchestral backing from the LA Phil. Whether you’re a theater devotee, a music lover, or someone seeking a cultural moment that dares to be different, this staging promises to be a season-defining theatrical event.
A Cast Like No Other: Legends in the Spotlight
The production is headlined by two dynamic powerhouses of stage and song: Cynthia Erivo and Adam Lambert.
Erivo—an Oscar®-nominated, Tony®, Grammy®, and Emmy® Award-winning performer—takes on the role of Jesus, making her long-awaited return to the stage following her breakout in The Color Purple and her film roles in Harriet and Wicked. This performance marks her first major theatrical role since Wicked and a homecoming of sorts after her 2021 performance with the LA Phil at the Bowl.
Opposite her, Adam Lambert—the electric, genre-defying frontman of Queen and a Broadway talent in his own right—delivers an explosive turn as Judas Iscariot. Known for his dazzling vocals and magnetic presence, Lambert brings both vulnerability and fire to one of musical theatre’s most complex antagonists.
Together, they form a revelatory pairing, reinterpreting the tumultuous final days of Jesus’s life through the fractured lens of friendship, betrayal, and fate.
A Stage Full of Star Power
The supporting cast adds even more luster to this already dazzling production:
- Josh Gad (Frozen, The Book of Mormon) as the flamboyant King Herod
- Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, Amélie) as the tender and conflicted Mary Magdalene
- Milo Manheim (Zombies, Dancing with the Stars) as loyal Peter
- Raúl Esparza (Company, Law & Order: SVU) as the stoic and tormented Pontius Pilate
- Zachary James, Tyrone Huntley, and Brian Justin Crum round out a stellar ensemble that blends Broadway gravitas with Hollywood flair
The result? A cast that doesn’t just perform but inhabits the roles—breathing new life into an iconic score and age-old narrative.
A Theatrical Rebirth at the Bowl
Directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Ain’t Too Proud, Jersey Boys), with musical supervision by Stephen Oremus (Wicked, The Book of Mormon), this production strips away sentimentality in favor of searing emotion, urgent rhythm, and revolutionary storytelling.
Rather than relying on traditional dialogue, the story is told entirely through music, capturing the emotional volatility of Jesus’s final week as seen through Judas’s conflicted eyes. It’s rock theatre at its most powerful—visceral, visual, and vocally soaring.
Produced by Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt, the production seeks not just to revisit a classic but to reimagine it, forging new emotional territory while honoring the musical’s original spirit of rebellion and transcendence.
A Statement of Inclusion and Creative Boldness
This revival isn’t just artistically bold—it’s culturally significant. Erivo’s casting as a female Jesus has sparked national conversation, which the artist herself has addressed with grace and grit. Calling theatre “the gayest place on Earth” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Erivo emphasized the freedom of interpretation and the power of inclusive casting.
“We’re not recreating the Bible,” she said. “We’re telling a story that’s meant to challenge, inspire, and connect.” Her performance, alongside Lambert’s own queer-informed portrayal of Judas, is set to challenge tradition and celebrate theatre as a space of boundary-breaking artistry.
