During my recent interview, executive story editor Shakina and guest star Wilder Yari discussed the latest episode, “The Family Treasure,” and its significant impact. It’s worth mentioning that Shakina also contributed as a writer for the episode.

“I like that season 1 of Quantum Leap showed us that we can create a new Quantum Leap for our present day. Then season 2 shows us why we should have created this Quantum Leap. We really take advantage of telling these stories today,” Shakina explained.

Season 2 of Quantum Leap takes the foundation laid in the first season and explores the reasons behind the quantum leap in greater depth. Shakina, the executive story editor, emphasized the importance of storytelling in the present day and the thrilling journey it creates, resonating with audiences.

“I think it’s a part of the general human experience,” Shakina explained.

Shakina highlighted the significance of including one’s family in their life, a sentiment that goes beyond the queer trans non-binary experience and resonates with the universal human experience of vulnerability and acceptance.

“I think one of the best parts about this episode is that, as queer people, we have this where there’s so much drama made out of coming out. And it can be an incredibly nerve-wracking experience,” Yari stated. They further said that what they loved was that, as opposed to that being the case for Dean, he didn’t look to his family for permission or acceptance. This is who they are, regardless of others judgments or opinions.

They both highlighted the episode’s impressive integration of a groundbreaking trans, non-binary coming-out moment into an exciting adventure, while discussing the LGBTQI 2+ voice. This episode offers viewers a unique opportunity to deeply connect with and gain insight into the life of a young trans, non-binary individual, thereby reshaping the way representation is portrayed in the media.

“Wilder just brought this unabashed queer joy to the role from the jump,” Shakina stated. They furthered that, as a writer, you hope to write an amazing story and have characters that viewers will follow and go on the journey with. They said Wilder did exactly that!
