Roderick McClure
1. Roderick, you mentioned that escaping a troubled childhood through movies fueled your passion for filmmaking. Can you share a particular film or moment that had a significant impact on you during that time?
Growing up watching movies exposed me to a world that was totally different from the neighborhood I grew up in. It was through watching movies that my dreams, goals and aspirations were formed. I knew I wanted to be successful and explore many things. Each movie had its own unique impression on me. One example was the role of Al Pacino in The Godfather. I saw a well-dressed young man that possessed power and courage in the face of danger. He was always cool, calm and collected. I became intrigued by the storyline and interested in filmmaking.
2. As a self-proclaimed late bloomer, how did completing your college education at nearly 40 influence your perspective on your career and life in general?
I believe it’s never too late to fulfill your goals or dreams. My motto is, “do something you never did before” and “it’s never too late”. Completing my education by the age of 40 was a result of my relationship with God. All my prayers had been answered. I was living this amazing life with a beautiful family, successful career and amazing lifestyle. I became overwhelmed with my blessings and developed a greater desire to learn more about our creator through biblical studies, church planting and mission work.
3. You are known for recognizing potential and making existing things better. Can you give an example of how you applied this skill in one of your films or projects?
We value the people we work with. Filming a movie requires a tremendous amount of time, effort and sacrifices from everyone involved. It’s important to keep morale positive with high energy levels. My goal is to bring out the best in everyone. That requires being intentional and involved. Spending time with everyone on the set helps me to understand what motivates them.
4. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when forming RodFather Productions, and how did you overcome them?
The greatest challenge we faced starting RodFather was finding the perfect script. We waited patiently on the right opportunity.
5. How do you balance the creative and business aspects of filmmaking, especially in a family-run company?
Sustainability is the goal. I’m hoping to build a business that will create generational wealth. We all share that common goal. That requires being open-minded, listening, respecting each other’s strengths and weaknesses. It also includes trust.
6. Could you elaborate on the unique environment you created on the set of ‘Both Eyes Open’ and how it contributed to the film’s success?
The set environment on Both Eyes Open was an amazing, exhilarating experience. We strive to treat people the way we would like to be treated. Very simply stated, everyone matters. The crew and cast expressed great appreciation and desire to join us on future projects. We also received strong endorsements from cast members after we wrapped.
Joshua Farrell:
1. Joshua, growing up without a father and battling chronic self-doubt must have been challenging. How did these experiences shape your approach to filmmaking and working with young creatives?
Growing up, I relied heavily on building a strong community of mentors and peers who were equally as driven to make something of themselves despite the hand they were dealt. These mentors and individuals, who had navigated similar struggles, provided invaluable guidance and advice, helping me find my path. I have always had this extreme curiosity about people’s personal stories that drove me to ask countless questions and immerse myself in their experiences. I was fascinated by the many different ways in how people approached and responded to their life’s challenges and opportunities. These real stories from real people ignited a passion within me to want to share everything I had just heard with as many people who would listen. This passion serendipitously led me to filmmaking, where I found a platform to help share numerous stories from various perspectives. As a producer, I’ve found the perfect outlet to bring stories to life.
When it comes to working with young creatives, my primary goal is to add value to their lives. I wouldn’t have achieved the success I have today without the trusted individuals who guided, challenged, and held me accountable. Hence, I feel a deep sense of duty to pay it forward and support others in their journeys. I strive to be approachable, honest, and a valuable resource to those around me. By doing so, I aim to create an environment where young creatives feel empowered, supported, and inspired to share their unique stories and ideas with the world. This approach not only enriches their lives but also contributes to the diverse tapestry of narratives we share through film.
2. You are described as a skilled people connector. Can you share a story where your ability to connect people led to a significant breakthrough in a project?
Aside from the numerous “How We Met” stories I’ve been credited for on various friends’ wedding websites, I’ve had the privilege of connecting people in ways that have significantly impacted professional projects. One story, in particular, stands out from our most recent project, Both Eyes Open. I casted a friend of mine from college, Michael Oloyede, to play a supporting role in the film. Michael has always been a phenomenal actor, who in my opinion has often been overlooked for many opportunities. Recognizing his potential, I knew he deserved a chance to showcase his abilities alongside the premier cast we had locked in already. When we were in the casting phase for the film, I introduced Michael to our director, Ariel Hairston, who was initially unaware of his work. After seeing his audition, she was instantly sold on casting him for a role in the film. She was amazed at his talent and remarked that “he is the perfect fit for the character.” This opportunity allowed Michael to demonstrate his acting prowess and will help him continue to gain the recognition he deserves.
In recent months, others have finally started to take notice of Michael’s talent. He had just completed a Broadway tour before we casted him where he starred in JaJa’s African Hair Braiding, which was recently nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Play. These breakthroughs are a testament to his hard work and dedication, and it highlighted the importance of giving talented individuals the chance to prove themselves.
This experience reinforced my belief in the power of advocacy and the impact of providing opportunities. By leveraging my connections and advocating for talented individuals, I can help them break through the systemic barriers that often hinder their progress. It’s not just about recognizing talent but also about actively creating pathways for them to succeed.
3. How has working alongside your father-in-law, Roderick, influenced your professional growth and personal development?
Working alongside my father-in-law, Roderick, has been profoundly influential in both my professional growth and personal development. From the day I met Rod, he has been a remarkable role model. His unwavering work ethic, relentless self-challenge, and boundless confidence have always inspired me. Rod’s tenacity and determination in the face of challenges have shown me the importance of perseverance and resilience. His ability to navigate complex situations with confidence and poise has taught me valuable lessons about leadership and decision-making. Observing how he approaches problems and finds innovative solutions has greatly enhanced my problem-solving skills and strategic thinking. Beyond his professional prowess, Rod’s giving heart and genuine love for others have deeply impacted me. He consistently demonstrates the importance of empathy, kindness, and generosity in both personal and professional relationships. His commitment to helping others and his ability to connect with people on a meaningful level have inspired me to cultivate these qualities within myself. Rod has also encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and take on new challenges. His belief in my abilities has boosted my confidence and motivated me to pursue opportunities I might have otherwise hesitated to take. This has led to significant personal growth and expanded my professional horizons. Working closely with Rod has provided me with a unique mentorship experience. His insights and advice have been invaluable, offering guidance that has helped shape my career path. He has shown me the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement, emphasizing that growth is a lifelong journey.
4. Your commitment to empowering others is evident. What are some of the ways you help young, exceptionally talented individuals break through systemic barriers in the industry?
One of the primary ways I support young talent is through mentorship. I actively seek out promising individuals and figure out how I could best add value to their lives. I focus on sharing my experiences and insights, I aim to shorten their learning curve and boost their confidence. I have always been a proponent of learning from other people’s mistakes so I don’t have to go through the same things just to learn the same lesson. This is why I am an open book when it comes to mistakes that I have made or experiences I have gone through that have yielded transformative growth in my life. Another thing I love to do is create and advocate for opportunities for people I see significant potential in. I use my network to introduce young creatives to industry professionals who can help them advance their careers. By facilitating these connections, I help them build relationships that are crucial for their professional growth. I focus on creating a supportive community. By fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual support among young creatives, I help them build a network of peers who can offer advice, share opportunities, and collaborate on projects. This sense of community not only empowers them but also creates a strong support system that can help them overcome challenges together. I had the pleasure of employing over 20 mentees and associates from my network for our most recent film, Both Eyes Open. This included actors and aspiring actors who either landed key roles in the film, key background spots or made meaningful connections for future opportunities. Photographers had their work credited in a feature film for the first time, as well as musical artists who created scores that were included in the film. Additionally, I hired a friend who is a chef that has been trying to expand her business to the film industry to cater our production, and she has since been hired for three other unrelated productions as a result of the excellent service she provided for ours. I also hired friends who own professional transportation services, who have subsequently received recurring clientele from our cast even after production concluded. And the list goes on. This collaborative effort not only enriched our film but also provided valuable opportunities for everyone involved.

6. Can you discuss a memorable moment from the making of ‘Both Eyes Open’ that encapsulates the dynamic between you and Roderick?
Rod and I often found ourselves sitting quietly next to each other, observing the hustle and bustle of our team as they executed their roles. It was during these moments of quiet reflection amidst the chaos that the significance of our journey would hit us. We would lean over to each other and whisper, “Can you believe we are actually doing this right now? We are actually making a movie.” It was a shared sentiment of awe and disbelief that this dream we had worked so hard to achieve was unfolding before our eyes. These moments required us to pinch ourselves, a grounding reminder of how far we had come together. What made these instances so memorable was not just the realization of our achievements, but also the deep sense of partnership and mutual respect we felt. Sitting there, side by side, we could see the tangible results of our combined efforts, the team we had assembled, and the creative energy that everyone brought to the project. It was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do and how important our collaboration is. These quiet, reflective moments highlighted the strength of our dynamic. We balanced each other out – where I might focus on the minute details, Rod would keep an eye on the bigger picture, and vice versa. This synergy allowed us to navigate the challenges of production smoothly and ensured that our vision was being realized to its fullest potential. Furthermore, witnessing the passion and dedication of our team reinforced the values we hold dear: valuing people, fostering creativity, and building a supportive environment. It was these principles that brought our diverse group together and made the project a success.
A Joint Conversation with Roderick McClure and Joshua Ferrell
1. RodFather Productions is described as a family business. How do you navigate the complexities of working so closely with family members, especially in high-stress environments like film sets?
We work together to establish a plan of execution prior to starting production. Everyone knows the goal is to operate with a standard of excellence. We just don’t get caught up in majoring in the minors. Once everyone receives their assignments it’s then time to execute. Everyone understands the stakes are high and there are lives depending on our success.
2. Faith is mentioned as a cornerstone of your partnership. How does your shared commitment to faith influence your decision-making and creative processes?
My faith provides an inner piece that enables me to remain calm and collected under all circumstances. Establishing a positive environment starts with leadership. We tend to find solutions without panic or creating unnecessary drama on the set. We can usually anticipate any potential challenges in advance and provide quick remedies.
3. What are some of the philanthropic organizations you support, and why are they important to you both?
I love supporting domestic organizations that empower future minority leaders and serve underserved communities. We also support various mission efforts in Africa.
4. Both Eyes Open’ is a psychological thriller exploring honesty and paranoia. How do you ensure that such complex themes are portrayed authentically and engagingly on screen?
Any script that addresses mental and social issues requires due diligence and proper research.
5. What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers who are looking to create dynamic and intriguing stories while overcoming personal and systemic challenges?
Become acquainted with how the backend of deals are structured. It will help them to be more realistic when pitching investors. Investors want to know you understand the backend.
6. Looking ahead, what are your future plans for RodFather Productions, and are there any upcoming projects you are particularly excited about?
We are very excited about our upcoming projects which includes a feature on the life of a brilliant young African American who, with no experience, founded an airline based in Atlanta by the age of 27. We are also developing an incredible animation project.
