First Look at “The Big Cigar,” a new series on Apple TV+ starring André Holland as Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton!
Apple TV+ has released a sneak peek of “The Big Cigar,” an eagerly awaited limited drama series that follows the captivating journey of Huey P. Newton, the leader of the Black Panther movement, as he flees to Cuba. This compelling series is inspired by the groundbreaking magazine article that shares its name. The global debut of “The Big Cigar” is set for May 17, with the first two episodes premiering. Subsequent episodes will be released every Friday until June 14. Don Cheadle, a highly acclaimed actor, producer, and director, takes on the role of director and executive producer for the initial two episodes.
The magazine article by Joshuah Bearman (“Argo”), which he will also executive produce, tells the captivating true story of Hollywood and social revolution colliding. “The Big Cigar” follows the daring escape of Black Panther founder Huey Newton from the FBI to Cuba, with the help of renowned producer Bert Schneider. The plan, which involves a fake movie production, takes unexpected twists and turns, resulting in a series of mishaps. And somehow, it’s all true. Decent.
André Holland is at the helm of a highly acclaimed ensemble cast that features Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, PJ Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman.
The showrunner for The Big Cigar is Janine Sherman Barrois, who is an NAACP Image Award winner known for her work on Claws and The Kings of Napa. The first episode of the show was written by Jim Hecht, who also worked on Winning Time. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Barrois and her Folding Chair Productions have an overall deal. Barrois and Hecht are executive producing alongside Bearman, Joshua Davis, and Arthur Spector (Little America) through their production company Epic.
