Season four of the popular series “For All Mankind” has been an incredible experience for actress Krys Marshall, who portrays the character of astronaut Danielle Poole. During our interview, Krys discussed the unexpected opportunity that led to her involvement in the show. This unexpected turn of events resulted in a whirlwind experience of learning and personal growth. The journey from a fortuitous audition to the triumph of season four is a truly inspiring story of unwavering determination and commitment.

“It’s unheard of. It’s like a unicorn. Who gets to do a series with this many seasons?” When asked about her overall experience, Marshall replied: When the script for “For All Mankind”didn’t initially come across Krys desk, it felt like destiny stepped in when a last minute audition opportunity presented itself. “They gave me eight pages of material to read, and half of the words I didn’t recognize,” Marshall shared. Fortunately, there was a scene where her character, Danielle, engaged in a heated debate with her colleagues.

Marshall expressed her lack of knowledge about being an astronaut and her limited understanding of science and technology. However, she found a connection in the scene’s portrayal of the need for self-defense and the feeling of being caught between two worlds.Krys quickly overcame any doubts about playing an astronaut and was thrilled to land the role the very next day. She eagerly embraced the exciting challenge that lay ahead. She immersed herself in a world of space exploration, Cold War history, and the complexities of being an astronaut. Krys’ remarkable success and her standing out in the role can be attributed to her dedication to learning on the job and the support from the show’s team.

“Thank God we have amazing writers, producers, and showrunners who want to protect the actors and make sure that we’re doing things right,” Marshall expressed. Krys found a new horizon as an actress with the unique appeal of “For All Mankind”, Apple’s first show on the platform, and its alternate timeline setting. The portrayal of Danielle across various decades and societal changes allowed for a thorough exploration of character development that surpassed the typical boundaries of modern television shows. Krys expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to explore the same story and characters across various decades and the different lives Danielle experienced.

The way Krys depicts Danielle’s journey through the Civil Rights Movement and her struggles as a black woman in the astronaut program truly captures the intricacies and depth of the character. She had to venture to a new location, bringing with her a unique perspective as a black woman who possessed a deep understanding of this aspect of American history, despite never having personally lived through it. She expressed how this character allowed her to explore uncharted emotional depths.

“I don’t know what it’s like to drink from separate water fountains or go to a segregated school. But Danielle knows what that’s like intimately,”Marshall explained. Krys provided her insights on the perception of the series leading up to season four. Throughout the course of its four seasons, the series presented a variety of obstacles and achievements at every turn. From establishing the groundwork in season one to delving into life on the moon in season two, and the triumphs and challenges in the following seasons, “We have a solid foundation for our characters. Now everything is being turned upside down. We are witnessing a dramatic upheaval in life on Mars. There is currently a disagreement between the people on the lower and upper decks. There is confusion and chaos there.” Marshall explained.
