From Ice to Screen: Gabriella Pession’s Journey of Reinvention and Creative Empowerment
In a captivating conversation, acclaimed Italian actress Gabriella Pession shared the remarkable journey that led her from aspiring ice skater to versatile performer and creative force. With over 25 years in the industry, Pession has not only graced the screen with powerful performances but has also evolved into a multifaceted artist, exploring new ways to express her creative vision.
Her path to acting was, as she describes it, serendipitous. “I didn’t really plan to be an actress. I had the idea of becoming an ice skater and pursuing the Olympics, but an injury to my ankle when I was skating forced me to quit my sport.” What initially seemed like a devastating setback ultimately became a blessing in disguise, as it led her to discover a new passion. “The start was really meant to be, I guess, and then I fell in love with acting,” Pession reflects. A pivotal moment came when she auditioned for renowned director Lina Wertmüller, who cast her in a lead role, marking the beginning of her acting career.
Over the years, Pession has embraced both the challenges and joys of her craft. She acknowledges the instability that comes with the entertainment industry but remains unwavering in her love for the art of performance. “The best thing about this business is really the act between ‘take’ and ‘cut’ or on stage, because the rest is tough,” she admits. This deep passion for the craft itself has fueled her desire to take more control over her creative journey.
Pession’s versatility shines in her recent roles, such as in Peacock’s Those About to Die and Disney+’s Tell Me Lies. These characters, often morally ambiguous, reflect her fascination with human complexity. “I like to play controversial roles. I like to play roles that are not flat, they’re not linear,” she explains. For Pession, the appeal of “morally gray” characters lies in their authenticity, as they resonate with audiences seeking more nuanced and layered storytelling.
Looking to the future, Pession is embarking on an exciting new chapter—writing and developing her own projects. “I’m writing my first TV show. I’m starting to develop my first full-length feature film,” she shares. This shift from actor to creator represents her growing desire for creative control. “I wanted to have the control more in my hands, rather than just hoping to get cast in something else,” she explains, signaling her ambition to tell stories that are deeply personal and meaningful to her.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Pession has dedicated herself to humanitarian causes, particularly supporting impoverished women and children, and advocating for mental health awareness. “I think the mental aspect is one of my priorities. I have a 10-year-old little boy, and I see a lot of kids struggling with depression and anxiety in this competitive society,” she says. Her advocacy for mental health stems from a deeply personal place, as she recognizes the pressures young people face today. “To talk through things is so important.”
By embracing creativity in various forms—whether acting, writing, or humanitarian work—Pession continues to evolve and inspire. Her belief that “we’re not just acting, we’re not just one thing” speaks to her broader philosophy of life and art. As she carves out new paths in her career, Pession’s impact on the industry and beyond is undeniable, leaving a lasting imprint on both her audience and the causes she champions.
