Jermel jump-started his acting career doing theater when he was younger, taking him on a lifetime journey.
“I must admit acting is in my blood. My grandfather was a singer. So acting was something that came naturally to me. It connected me to my purpose.”
Jermel plays Hudson Patterson in the series Kombucha Cure which is a dark comedy inspired by events in the medical field. The series focuses on what happens in a small town’s health insurance system when the town puts a casino over the health of its patients.
“I’m currently working on the series Kombucha Cure. I can probably say acting found me. It was always my destiny.”
Jermel also captures the essence of William Hill who was a writer and a poet with a drug addiction that causes his life to go downhill in the This Is Us series. Jermel is hoping the series will change someone’s life. He also would love to play the late Andre Leon Talley who was an American fashion journalist, stylist, and editor of Vogue magazine.
“I believe his story needs to be told. Many people are not aware of the contribution he made to society, and I feel the world did not understand him. He was the Black Liberace of his time.”
Jermel also loves to travel he’s a firm believer that people should spend time seeing the world they live in and exploring other cultures. It has helped shape who he is and expanded his horizon.
“I traveled to twelve countries in one year. When I got off the plane in Ghana, I could feel the love in the air. It connected me to my culture. I believe everyone needs to experience that.”
Many people may not know this but, Jermel is more than an actor. He is a humanitarian. When Jermel is not acting, he spends a lot of time in Detroit where he owns several buildings helping low-income families with housing. He also provides work for people with a criminal background that may have a difficult time getting employment.
“I believe in giving back to the community and helping people less fortunate than myself. It’s just a humanity thing to do.”
