Kristen Lappas talks creating the documentary Giannis: The Marvelous Story
Sports documentaries go beyond the game, exploring human emotion and resilience. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s story is truly captivating, showcasing his rise from modest roots to becoming a star in the NBA, highlighting the importance of family, sacrifice, and relentless determination.
Kristen Lappas, the director of Giannis: The Marvelous Story, skillfully weaves together the threads of Giannis’s personal story with the themes of fatherhood, triumph, and the significance of home, taking viewers on a poignant exploration of his life. The film delves into Giannis’s past through personal interviews and emotional moments, uncovering the significant influence of his father, Charles, on his career and character.
“I did all of my research. And I knew his story and what had been written about it. He and his family had never done long-form sit-down interviews, telling their story through their words. So I was hoping that when I went into these interviews, they were going to tell me things that hadn’t been reported or documented. And that absolutely was the case,” Lappas shared.
The documentary conveys a deep message of sacrifice and parental love. Kristen eloquently portrays Veronica and Charles Antetokounmpo’s steadfast support for their children, underscoring the significant influence of their sacrifices on Giannis and his siblings’ achievements. This statement beautifully illustrates the significant impact parents can have on shaping their children’s futures.
“As a parent myself, honestly, they’ve changed the way that I parent my own children. They had absolutely nothing, and they gave everything to these boys. And look what came out of it! They’re so wildly successful,” Lappas explained.
Furthermore, the movie explores the intricate bond between Giannis and his family with their native country, Greece, touching on themes of acceptance, identity, and redemption. Kristen mentioned that they were initially rejected but have now been approved. They are hailed as heroes. Giannis has very conflicting emotions about his hometown due to certain childhood experiences. The Antetokounmpo family’s journey from being outsiders in their own country to becoming celebrated heroes reflects a larger narrative of resilience in the face of adversity and the transformative power of perseverance.
“This project helped me grow as a filmmaker. One of the reasons is that, because of the way Giannis grew up, there was no footage of his childhood. There were very few family photographs. There was no home video. The first time he was filmed on camera was when he was sixteen years old,” Lappas shared.
The documentary impresses with Kristen’s unique storytelling approach, especially in depicting Giannis’s childhood experiences despite limited archival footage. The director’s decision to stage scenes in the actual locations where key events took place adds a sense of authenticity to the narrative, allowing viewers to experience the raw emotions and environments that influenced Giannis during his early years.
Kristen skillfully navigates a real-time narrative, documenting the career evolution of current superstar Giannis on film. The director demonstrates a strong skill in capturing the intricacies of portraying a legendary figure’s life story, encompassing both triumphs and challenges. This highlights her evolution as a filmmaker, expanding the horizons of storytelling within the sports documentary field.
