Malika Blessing: A Purpose-Driven Journey in Faith, Art, and Uplifting Others
Malika Blessing is a force of light, radiating warmth, faith, and an unwavering commitment to lifting others. Her journey began with a simple nickname given by her mother: “Blessing.” But for Malika, this wasn’t just a name; it became a mission. From a young age, she took it upon herself to embody this blessing, uplifting others, celebrating their success, and making their dreams her own. For Malika, it’s not just a way of life; it’s a purpose she carries into everything she does.
As an actress, Malika sees talent as something far greater than a path to personal fame. To her, it’s a gift meant to inspire and uplift. She is often the quiet but powerful support behind her friends and colleagues, pushing them toward their dreams, cheering them on, and sharing her knowledge freely. “I don’t do things just to get something in return,” she says. “I do it because this is how God made me, and I want to see people win.” This dedication has endeared her to many in the industry. Still, Malika remains steadfast, driven by a commitment to live life with compassion and purpose.
Malika’s path into the world of entertainment was never about fame. While at Grambling State University, she immersed herself in every aspect of theater, from acting, costume design, set design and lighting. A professor once told her she’d make an excellent producer, but she was adamant: “I’m an actor.” Her professor saw something in her that she couldn’t see at the time. As her career unfolded, her versatility proved invaluable, allowing her to step into any role behind the scenes—a skill that has since defined her. Working alongside the legendary actress Ella Joyce, Malika not only mastered the technical intricacies of production and stage management but also absorbed invaluable lessons in leadership and empathy. Malika traveled for five years with Ms. Joyce’s one-woman play “A Rose Among Thorns” a tribute to Rosa Parks. The knowledge that Malika learned from Ms. Joyce cultivates her ability to create supportive spaces where colleagues feel respected and valued. Malika continues to dedicate herself to the craft and those she works with.
Although she thrived in production roles, Malika never let go of her love for acting. A turning point came when playwright Don B. Welch reminded her of her true passion, telling her, “You want to act, right? Well, then act.” His simple but powerful encouragement reignited her commitment, and soon Malika found herself working alongside legends she’d admired for years, like Loretta Devine, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Jackee’ and Marla Gibbs. With renewed faith, she surrendered her desire for control, trusting her journey to divine guidance.
Her role as Caden.a guardian for the council in the supernatural series Wicked City allowed Malika to bring something truly unique to the screen. Caden’s magical powers are invisibility and healing. Caden has to maintain a delicate balance between loyalty to the council and her personal desires, which requires her to convey both strength and vulnerability simultaneously. She sees Caden as an opportunity to represent Black women in a genre that has often left them on the margins. Malika hopes that viewers see themselves in Caden’s strength and complexity and realize that Black women, too, can lead powerful, multidimensional stories.
Playing Caden has been personally transformative for Malika. “It was eye-opening for me because I wanted people to be able to see that they can see themselves in me, that they can do anything,” she explains. “I am a Black woman that’s curvy—you know what I’m saying?” She’s moved by the response from women who tell her, “Wow, I can be you. I can do that. It doesn’t matter what size, what color, skin, none of that. You can do it.” Caden isn’t just a guardian, she’s someone with a complex inner life, navigating power, duty, and sacrifice. Bringing that depth to life, while also embracing the action-packed, magical elements of the role, allows her to push herself as an actor. Malika poured herself into the craft, even watching series like Charmed to understand the supernatural genre. “I had to create Caden,” she says. “There wasn’t a Caden out there for me to study from.” Malika says “It has been thrilling to portray a character who is powerful but also has moments of emotional struggle, making Caden’s journey relatable even within the supernatural realm.”
Malika sees Wicked City as a groundbreaking work within the horror genre, especially showcasing not only African American characters but characters of the global Diaspora in ways that go beyond stereotypes that too often limit Black actors in supernatural stories. Historically, horror has lacked meaningful representation for people of color, but Wicked City offers complex characters with rich storylines, placing them at the center of the narrative rather than on the sidelines. For Malika, Wicked City demonstrates that diverse storytelling can enrich the genre, making it more inclusive, relevant, and thrilling for all audiences.
As Wicked City has progressed through multiple seasons, Malika feels a deep sense of gratitude. “Thank you, God, for putting me in a position and choosing me,” she reflects, “and giving me the gift that I didn’t ask for.” She views her role in the series as part of a larger cultural shift—one that allows Black audiences to feel seen and celebrated. Each new season brings a fresh reminder of her purpose and the power of faith.
In the end, Malika’s journey is one of resilience, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to be a blessing to others. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, perseverance, and the simple but profound desire to lift others. Whether on screen, behind the scenes, or in her everyday interactions, Malika Blessing embodies the gift of her name—a true blessing to all she encounters.
