Nurse, health nutritionist, and wellness coach Kellie Bowman discusses her herbalist journey and plant-based diet benefits.
Dr. Kellie Bowman, daughter of the late renowned herbalist Dr. Sebi, proudly carries forward her father’s legacy through her venture, Sebi’s Daughters, situated in Atlanta, Georgia. With a strong commitment to fostering healthy living, she strives to educate people about the significance of consuming whole foods, cultivating habits that promote well-being, dispelling common health myths, and advocating evidence-based practices. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Kellie Bowman about her fascinating life’s journey because I was interested in the advantages of whole foods and curious to learn more about her.
“When I became a nurse, I knew it would be a challenge because I have such a natural base legacy. I wanted to become a nurse to continue to educate our community. I would tear up or feel discouraged when I watched a customer or client come in to see my dad and they felt like they had no answers from their health care providers. They are left with pills, no hope, and no progress,” stated Bowman.
Kelly recognized the urgent need to break the cycle of addiction and poor dietary choices that were taking a toll on our community. Her objective was to bridge the gap in communication and understanding, thus uniting what was potentially overlooked with her knowledge to effect positive change.
“When I got into nursing school, I noticed the same things with the people in hospitals and nursing homes, and those in rehab were still having those same issues. Never once did we address, from my perspective, the way we were eating that would help balance their bodies when they left or give them any tutorials or education. They just advised them to eat well, take your pills, and live life,” stated Bowman.
As the daughter of an herbalist, Kellie believed there was a more effective approach. As she embarked on her career, she combined the knowledge passed down from her father with the love and values instilled in her by her mother, creating a bridge between the two. This included her respect for God, which played a central role in her work.
“That’s how Kelly Bowman got started. Then I realized I wanted to come out of the hospital and teach at colleges. I wanted to make sure the message was getting through. When it came to discussing health and nutrition subject matter, it became my forte. Talking to my students was more than just the subject matter; it was sharing life experiences through what we eat and what we do behind it. It became my ministry,” stated Bowman.
Kelly spoke highly about her love for God, sharing that her favorite color, green, carries a message within itself. Bowman had this to say: “One of the first vegetations was grass. I always found natural things fascinating. I also love to make people smile, not with their faces but with their hearts. Because they got more information when they came in, if I can leave you better than I found you, then my presence has been accomplished.”
Kelly, born with some health issues, understood that her diet was crucial for her longevity and well-being. “I was not a healthy child. I was born with a heart condition related to a weak heart valve, which my father’s brother died from. Once my father learned about my condition, he was vigilant about guiding me. I don’t know if I was his first client to experience this, but I was his first child to go through it, and that’s what bonded us together,” explained Bowman.
I was eager to hear Kelly’s explanation regarding why some plant-based eaters are overweight, even though many of them do not consume meat. Here is what she had to say.
“There are different variations of what people talk about when they consider themselves plant-based. This is why I love the alkaline diet because it separates those particular grains—fruits and grains—that are highest
in alkaline minerals from the ones that are not. Some people may not know that wheat and white bread have the lowest nutritional value. While a diet focused on whole plant foods can provide numerous health benefits, it is still possible to consume excessive amounts of unhealthy plant-based foods such as processed snacks, refined grains, and sugary beverages. These foods can contribute to weight gain and other health issues, according to Bowman.
Recent statistics show obesity is a growing concern worldwide. In the United States, 39.6 percent of adults are obese, while over 1 billion people globally face obesity issues, including 340 million adolescents and 39 million children. This alarming trend highlights the need for individuals to take control of their health and make informed decisions about their diet and lifestyle. One such solution is Dr. Kellie Bowman’s plant-based diet, which has been gaining popularity among health enthusiasts.
