The Disney Animation/Kugali new series “IWÁJÚ” trailer is now available.
There is now a new trailer released for the original series “Iwájú.” An exciting collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African Comic Book Entertainment Company Kugali brings you an all-new series streaming on Disney+ starting Feb. 28. Set in futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, this captivating coming-of-age story introduces Tola (voiced by Simisola Gbadamosi), a young girl from a wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole (voiced by Siji Soetan), a self-taught tech expert. Together, they unravel the mysteries and perils lurking within their contrasting worlds. The filmmakers behind “Iwájú” – director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku – invite viewers on a captivating journey into the vibrant world of Lagos. Through their masterful storytelling and innovative visual elements, they bring to life a truly unique and immersive experience. Disney Animation’s Christina Chen has produced “Iwájú” with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson. The film also includes the talented voices of Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, and Weruche Opia.
Digital release of the soundtrack will be available on March 1.
The series features authentic African-influenced music composed by Ré Olunuga, a highly acclaimed Nigerian composer known for his work on the 2022 Disney+ original movie “Rise” and the BBC film “Girl.” “I seldom let my personal emotions influence my approach to composing a score,” he stated. I have a tendency to deeply immerse myself in the emotions of the characters or subjects, which I then skillfully translate into music. Unfortunately, it was inevitable in this situation. Aside from Tola’s adventurous spirit and Kole’s ingenuity, ‘Iwájú’ delves into various captivating emotional themes. The score reflects my profound affection for Lagos and its intricate complexity. Additionally, it offers numerous surprises and nods to those who are knowledgeable or intrigued by the musical landscape of Nollywood. Being invited by Ziki and the incredible teams at Disney and Kugali to contribute to this captivating coming-of-age story that delves into the depths of family, friendship, and ingenuity has been an extraordinary journey in its own right.
