The Journey of Dorian Missick: From Childhood Dreams to Hollywood
I had the pleasure of speaking with veteran actor Dorian Missick. You can catch him in the role of Congressman Ron Dellums in the Netflix film Shirley. During our discussion, he recounted his remarkable journey from a lively child in New Jersey to a thriving actor in Hollywood.
During a chat with Dorian’s second-grade teacher, her son’s involvement in commercials ignited his interest in acting. “She essentially brushed me off and said I wouldn’t be suitable for television due to my inability to follow directions, claiming that all successful actors must be able to follow directions,” Missick explained. Despite her opinions, Dorian was resolute due to the burning passion within him. Shortly after enrolling in his first acting class, his strong determination and refusal to let others’ opinions sway him ultimately led him to secure his first commercial job. This initial experience paved the way for his extraordinary journey in the entertainment field.
“I’m a big believer that what God has for you, no man can take away,” Missick replied when asked what’s the secret to him staying vigilant in his tough and ever-changing industry. It’s his faith that allows him to understand that the only thing he is in control of in this industry is showing up and being prepared to audition. Dorian says he walks into each audition room with a spirit of gratitude because it’s a “privilege” to be considered for a role. “I look at it as an adventure every time I go for a role. It’s like I’m hunting for a new job each time,” Missick explained.
“She said I’m going to give you two hundred dollars a month for your first year. After that, you have to figure something else out if it’s not working. And in a year to that day, I got my first really big check,” Missick stated. During our conversation, he spoke highly about the continued support and motivation he received from his mom. This led him to pay his bills upfront for the first year and to be able to travel. He praises his mom’s faith in him, which allowed him to achieve his goal of acting success.
“It allows for me to have money set aside for either a rainy day or the opportunity to pick and choose if I want to take a role,” Missick shared.
Prior to delving into his most recent project, “Shirley,” Dorian offered valuable insights into establishing a sustainable business model. This model allows him to financially support himself through his gigs and choose roles that either resonate with him or align with his current aspirations. “I’ve always been content with a simple lifestyle.” As Missick’s income increased, he would adjust his standards accordingly. He expanded his financial portfolio and sought the expertise of a financial planner. He emphasizes the significance of everyone’s contribution, particularly actors in the gig economy.
“Your work is going to stick around, but something as significant as a period piece with cultural significance is something I’ve always wanted the opportunity to do,” Missick shared.
Dorian immersed himself in his latest project, “Shirley,” emphasizing the significance of depicting historical figures such as Congressman Ron Dellums with reverence and accuracy. As a child, watching movies like Glory, Soldier’s Story, and Malcolm X inspired him to dream of being involved in something similar one day. Immersing himself in research and studying the political landscape of the ’70s brought authenticity to his role. He started his exploration of his character by reading the late Congressman’s book “Laying Down with Lions.” He confessed to having limited knowledge about him. I immersed myself in his books. After that, I headed to YouTube to watch videos of him speaking, since he appears in numerous documentaries. Missick explained that he used this to help him learn his cadence.
Dorian expressed that this project holds great significance for him, both professionally and personally. It aims to bring attention to overlooked narratives and celebrate the achievements of influential figures such as Shirley Chisholm. Her portrayal aims to encourage viewers to delve deeper into significant historical figures and actively engage in the political process. According to him, this movie is an excellent introduction for those unfamiliar with Shirley Chisholm.
This project marks the beginning of a broader mission for Dorian. He discussed his current projects, a podcast and documentary for A&E. The band The Edge of Daybreak recorded an album while they were in jail in 1979. The album’s release by a major record label is truly remarkable. Missick stated that the story revolves around music, redemption, and the US prison system. He is reuniting the band to share their stories and truths.
Dorian’s evolution from a curious child with a dream to an experienced actor leaving his imprint in the industry showcases the strength of determination and self-confidence. His passion for sharing untold stories highlights his profound appreciation for the art of storytelling and its impact.
