Music has always had a significant impact on individuals, often accompanying them through their most memorable or difficult experiences. During my recent interview with Deputy, a highly respected producer, discussed his personal views on the significance of music and how it has influenced his life and career. Deputy believes that music holds a special power to capture significant moments in our lives, enabling us to form deep connections with certain songs that evoke memories and emotions. He sees music as a powerful source of solace, vitality, and inspiration.

“For me, music is the soundtrack of moments in our lives,” Deputy expressed.

Deputy, as a producer, highlights the significance of comprehending an artist’s intentions and mindset during a collaborative project. He conveyed a contemplative perspective, reflecting on the importance of understanding an artist’s intentions. Deputy focuses on comprehending their desires and goals in life and their current stage in their career. However, it is important for him to grasp their desired destination and the approach they wish to take.

“I’m at a phase in my career where I’m going for what I want,” Deputy shared.

He emphasized the importance of collaborating with artists who are motivated to reach their objectives and create a lasting influence with their music. Deputy’s method entails having personal conversations with artists to understand their emotional and mental states. This allows him to customize the musical expression to accurately convey their intentions and emotions.

“When we first went into the studio, my intention from the beginning was to do something special,” Deputy shared.

The conversation explored the Grammy-nominated track “On My Mama,” which was produced by Deputy for Artist Victoria Monet. The author eloquently discussed the process of delving into Victoria’s mindset and emotional journey during the creation of the song. The focus was on the importance of using music to communicate relatable and empowering messages. “My goal was to create a unique experience for her, taking into consideration her mental state,” Deputy explained. He also mentioned that Victoria’s determination to return to work after giving birth was a great source of inspiration for him. Experiencing these intimate moments with artists, where vulnerability and effective communication foster a powerful synergy between the artist and producer, is truly remarkable.

I’m glad I paid attention to her words as she was writing. I could immediately tell that this record would resonate with many women. Deputy shared that this is something that many people, in general, are searching for – confidence within themselves.

Deputy’s insights provide a deeper understanding of the creative process, revealing how music has the ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. Understanding the artist’s state of mind, emotions, and spiritual connection is crucial for him when working together in the studio. Being aware of their emotional state helps me determine the desired energy for the song. Deputy emphasized the importance of accurately conveying the artist’s intended message.

I went back a couple years with Deputy during this part of the conversation as it reminded me of his other Grammy nomination with Rihanna for the song Bitch Better Have My Money. “I was in a dark place at that time,”  Deputy shared honestly. He has faced numerous challenges throughout his journey in the music industry. Deputy was able to  effectively capture the shared sense of discontent felt by both Rihanna and himself, delving into the personal sacrifices and shattered expectations they have both endured.

Despite facing challenges, he remained resilient and chose to prioritize the process rather than getting caught up in unfulfilled hopes. He urged aspiring producers and songwriters to remain authentic to their artistic visions and persist through the challenges of entering the industry.

“I always say to fall in love with the journey and not the expectations,” Deputy shared.

Near the end of our conversation Deputy expressed his hopes for ongoing personal and professional development, highlighting his commitment to family and exploring opportunities outside of the music industry. His dedication to intelligent financial planning and spreading out his investments demonstrates a thoughtful approach to ensuring his future and establishing lasting stability. Deputy’s journey is a powerful example of the tenacity and drive needed to thrive in the constantly changing music industry.
