Unpacking the Thrills: Karen David talks about Season 2 of “The Irrational”
Karen David has become a powerhouse name in television, known for bringing grace, passion, and depth to every role she takes on. From her breakout performance as Princess Isabella in ABC’s musical fantasy Galavant to portraying Princess Jasmine in Once Upon a Time and Grace in AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, Karen has captivated audiences with her versatility and talent. She’s also shone in critically acclaimed series like Barry and Legacies, as well as fan favorites like The Rookie and Criminal Minds.
With her impressive body of work and ability to breathe life into layered, complex characters, it’s no wonder Karen is firmly on our radar as a talent to watch. Now, she returns to NBC’s The Irrational as Rose, the enigmatic ex-MI6 operative whose past and present collide in thrilling, unpredictable ways. As Season 2 approaches, Karen sat down to share insights into Rose’s journey and the electrifying twists that await.
A New Chapter for Rose
“Rose is not your average lass,” Karen says with a chuckle, her voice a blend of admiration and mystery. “She’s an ex-MI6 agent who had to leave everything she loved and start over. I mean, is Rose even her real name? She’s solving cases as a corporate fixer now, but that godlike complex from her MI6 days—it stays with you.”
For Karen, Rose’s allure lies in her complexity. “Being an ex-MI6 agent is, from what I’ve done with my research—and we have consultants as well—a very compelling career. You have access to state resources within a snap of a finger. It gives you a godlike complex, which totally ruins you for the rest of your life. Certainly for Rose. But it was also part of Rose’s escapism, where she could wear many different hats and be anything and anyone but herself. She’s escaping a lot of inner chaos and childhood traumas.”
Karen adds, “What I love about Rose is that she’s always walking a tightrope. Her connection with Alec Mercer, played brilliantly by Jesse L. Martin, allows her to peel back some of the layers and explore who she truly is—something she’s never had the luxury of doing before. Alec represents safety and understanding in a way she’s never known. It’s almost like she’s going on a very therapeutic journey, whether she likes it or not. Their relationship is special because it allows them both to start asking hard questions about their pasts and begin healing.”
Season 2: Raising the Stakes
As Season 2 unfolds, Karen promises even more twists, turns, and emotional depth. “Expect the unexpected,” she teases with a knowing smile. “There are little nuggets—or maybe bombs—waiting to explode. The stakes are higher, the cases are more thrilling, and the dynamics between the characters are richer than ever.”
One of the most exciting developments, Karen reveals, is the evolving relationship between Rose and Marissa. “It’s the girl duo we never knew we needed,” Karen says with a laugh. “Navigating these high-stakes international cases together is exhilarating. Marissa challenges Rose in ways she doesn’t expect, and as an actor, it’s such a joy to explore that kind of dynamic relationship.”
Karen also reflects on the overall growth of the show. “With every new show, Season 1 is always about finding your feet. Season 2 got even better. It’s bigger, the stakes are higher, and the cases are so different now. We’re diving into international cases, and seeing these characters immerse themselves with one another more is exciting.”
A Role That Keeps Her On Her Toes
Karen’s enthusiasm for playing Rose is infectious. “It’s never a dull moment with Rose,” she admits. “She keeps me on my toes in the most wonderful way. As an actor, that’s what you want—to be scared, to grow, and to feel challenged. Rose allows me to do all of that.”
Karen also credits the show’s creative team and cast for making the experience so fulfilling. “The chemistry on set is electric. Everyone brings their A-game, and that energy is contagious. It’s a collaborative environment that pushes us all to dig deeper and give our best.”
Looking Ahead
As the conversation winds down, Karen’s warmth and genuine passion shine through. “Season 2 is bigger, more thrilling, and truly a new day in school every episode,” she says. “We’re diving into uncharted waters with these characters and their stories, and I think viewers will be captivated by what’s to come.”
So, as The Irrational returns to our screens, prepare for a season brimming with adrenaline, secrets, and unyielding suspense. With Karen David at the helm, Rose’s journey is set to be a rollercoaster of emotions and thrills. Buckle up—as this season will have you in your seat in anticipation.
