It has been two decades since Australia first embraced RICKI-LEE on Australian Idol. She has now unveiled the fourth single from her much-awaited fifth album ‘On My Own’, set to be released on March 8. This version of the KISS classic ‘I Was Made For Loving You’ introduces a fresh take by incorporating elements of the original global classic, creating a blend of new and familiar sounds.

Ricki-Lee says, “There’s been a huge trend over the past 10 years with artists featuring classic songs, putting a modern spin on them, and writing a new song around these classic choruses or hooks. It’s fascinating to see kids discovering these classic old songs for the first time and thinking they’re original, but also seeing us ‘oldies’ fall in love with these songs all over again in a new way”.

Ricki-Lee and her collaborators, Anthony Egizii & David Musumeci from DNA Songs, were adding the finishing touches to the album when they felt it needed something more. Ricki-Lee describes how they aimed to create a euphoric, uplifting dancefloor song for the album by experimenting with a new genre they dubbed ‘glitter disco pop’. We began experimenting with ideas and came up with a verse and pre-chorus. As we reached the chorus, one of us spontaneously started singing the chorus of ‘I Was Made For Loving You’. We embraced the opportunity and successfully obtained permission from KISS to use the song. Once we received their approval, the decision was easy. This song is incredibly uplifting and fun. I’m really proud of how we paid homage to one of the biggest songs in the world while staying true to both the original and our new creation.

However, in order to use the song, they had to relinquish all publishing rights. Ricki-Lee tells, “Even though we only used two lines from the Kiss song – we had to give up 100% of the publishing if we wanted to use it, and we weren’t allowed to be credited as songwriters at all. But it was just too good not to use – it worked so perfectly and really made the song!

The artist, who has achieved multi-platinum sales and received ARIA Award nominations, is set to release her new album ‘On My Own’ on March 8. This album marks a significant milestone as she is releasing it through her own record label and has ownership of her masters for the first time. With two out of the three singles from the album already reaching #1 on the charts (On My Own & Ghost), fans have eagerly anticipated this release for 10 years.

It’s only fitting that Ricki-Lee will be touring at the end of 2024 with global superstars Take That & Sophie Ellis-Bextor for A Day On The Green, amidst all this nostalgia in the air.
